Further information:

Albert was born in Fishponds the son of a bootmaker and the eldest of six children with two sisters and three brothers. His mother died when he was in his teens and Albert acquired a stepbrother and stepsister when his father remarried in 1905. Albert married Ada Buckland in 1913.

Albert served with "D" Battery, 181st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, his brigade served with the 40th division and were mobilised to France in June 1916 where they fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Loos and The Battle of the Ancre on the Somme. Albert was killed in action, but as his battalion were not taking part in any significant engagement on the day of his death it is likely that he died during the ongoing trench warfare that accounted for 300 soldier deaths per day. After the armistice, his body was exhumed from the battlefield and reburied in its current location.
