Arthur was born in Kingswood, a middle child of six children with two brothers and three sisters. His mother was widowed when Arthur was aged four and when she later remarried, he acquired a step-brother and step-sister. His step-father was in the boot industry.
Arthur served with the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, his battalion was mobilised to France in August 1918 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including Ypres, Loos, The Somme and Arras. Arthur was wounded in May of 1918 and awarded a wound stripe. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Scarpe (26–30 August 1918) which was one of the battles in the Hundred Days Offensive (8 August – 11 November) 1918. The Offensive resulted in a decisive allied victory and led to the end of the First World War but the number of allied casualties during this period was an astronomical 1,070,000.
Arthur’s brother Frederick was also killed in action in France, two months later.
