John Pick was born in about 1886 in Bagstone in Wickwar. His parents were Alfred William Pick and Sylvia (nee Marsh) Pick. His siblings were Ellen, Harold, Alfred and Richard. His brother Richard died in infancy and his mother died in 1902. His father had worked as a farmer in Bagstone

John enlisted in Bristol in about April 1916 and joined the 2nd/4th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment as a private. He was Killed in Action on 27th August 1917 at the age of 31 and is he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium. He is also commemorated on the Wickwar war memorials and the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board (now at Yate and District Heritage Centre). He is incorrectly identified as A. Pick on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial and on the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals
