Amos was born in St George in Bristol, the son of a coal miner and a middle child of ten with six brothers and three sisters. Amos married Mabel Bryant in 1912 and together they had one child Donald Roy.

Amos served with the 8th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, his regiment mobilised to France in July of 1915 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Loos in September 1915. Amos was killed in action in The Battle of Pozières (23 July – 3 September 1916) which took place in France around the village of Pozières, during the Battle of the Somme. The fighting ended with the British in possession of the plateau north and east of the village at the cost of 23,000 allied casualties. The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, where Amos is remembered, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who have no known grave and over 90% of whom lost their lives during the Battle of the Somme.
