Further information:
Albert was born in Mangotsfield. He was the eldest son of a bootmaker with a younger brother Alec. Albert’s natural father died when Albert was 2 years old and Alec was a baby. Albert’s mother later married his step-father William Gingell, a farm labourer and had three more daughters and another son who were Albert’s half-siblings. Albert was working as a box maker in the boot industry in 1911. He married Eliza Williams, a tailoress in July 1912, and began working as a bootmaker. Their son Eric Albert was born in 1915 and was under 2 years of age when Albert died. Albert’s younger brother Alec also died in active service just 5 weeks after Albert.
Albert would have mobilised to France with his battalion (the 8th) in 1915 and throughout 1916 fought in the Battles of The Somme. Albert was killed in action during the Battle of Passchendaele (the third battle of Ypres) which lasted from 31st July to 10th November 1917 and resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans. The cemetery where Albert is buried was used by fighting units and field ambulances until March 1918.
