Further information:
Albert was born in Fishponds, the son of a labourer and a middle child of six with four brothers and a sister.
Albert joined up in 1914 and by August 1916 his battalion was fighting in Greece on the Macedonian Front (21 October 1915 – 30 September 1918) as part of the British Salonika Force, against the Germans, Bulgarians and Ottomans. In September 1916 Albert was treated for an unknown fever and again three months later. The following April he was killed in action in the Battle of Dojran. The Salonika force suffered 2,800 deaths in action, as well as 1,400 deaths from wounds and a further 4,200 deaths from sickness, particularly malaria, however there were few Allied successes until the last two months of the campaign. The memorial stands roughly in the centre of the line occupied for two years by the Allies in Macedonia and marks the scene of fierce fighting of 1917-1918 that resulted in the majority of the Commonwealth battle casualties.
