Alfred William Powell was born in 1877 in Wickwar. His parents were Alban and Jane Powell (nee Underhill). He was brother to Joseph, Frederick, Reginald, James and Dora. His father was a building contractor and was born in Wickwar

Alfred was living with his parents in Hill View, Sodbury Road, Wickwar in 1911 and working as a house painter. Alfred married Gwendoline Annie White in 1912 and they lived at 31 Brigstocke Road, St. Paul’s, Bristol

Alfred joined the 644th North Midlands Field Company of the Royal Engineers and became a sapper. He died of influenza in Kent in February 1919 at the age of 41. He is buried in Wickwar New Burial Ground and he has a CWGC headstone. He is commemorated on the war memorial in Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar
