Albert was born in Bitton the son of a bootmaker and the second eldest of six children with three sisters and two brothers.
Albert enlisted in 1914 and served with the 7th (Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry) Battalion, Border Regiment. His regiment mobilised to France in July 1915. They fought with the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in various actions including Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres Albert was killed in action in The First Battle of Bapaume (24th – 25th March 1918) which was a battle fought during Operation Michael (21 Mar 1918 – 5 Apr 1918). Operation Michael was a victory for the Germans at a cost to the allies of 239,800 casualties. Albert’s body was never identified and the Arras Memorial where he is remembered, commemorates nearly 35,000 soldiers of the British, South African and New Zealand forces who fell near Arras during WW1 and have no known grave.
