Alfred was born in Kingswood the son of a bootmaker and the youngest child of seven with four sisters and two brothers. Alfred married Gladys Rosina Williams who worked in corset manufacturing in 1938.

Alfred served with the 97 Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Alfred went over to France in the Normandy Landings in June 1944 and was killed the following month during the fighting to capture Caen. He was initially buried at Baron-Sur-Odon and reburied at Banneville after the war.
