Alfred’s battalion was part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and mobilised to France on 12th August 1916, where they fought as part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division in both France and Flanders. Alfred was killed in fighting during the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and the cemetery where he is buried, was located near the front line. The cemetery was used by Commonwealth divisions from July 1916 until September 1918. Alfred’s memorial in Falfield Church is an inscription on the font cover in which reads “To the Glory of God and in memory of Alfred Matthews, 44th Canadian Infantry (Scouts Section) Killed in action March 1st 1917 Buried at Villars-au-Bois France. From his sister Anne Grant King, wife of the vicar of the parish”
