Alfred was born in Bitton, the youngest son of a brick manufacturer, A.J. Bridges of Court Road, Kingswood, which closed in 1926. According to the 1911 census when he was 8 years old, he was living with his parents, who were in their fifties, 2 older sisters in their twenties and an older brother aged 31 who was working as an assistant to Alfred’s father. As an adult Alfred too went into the brick business but in Chippenham and he married Lillie Wilma Douglas in 1925.

Alfred was serving on the home front when he died as the result of an accident near North Walsham in Norfolk.
