Arthur was born in St. George in Bristol, the youngest child of a butcher with four sisters and four brothers.

Arthur would have enlisted on his 18th birthday in 1917 and joined the 5th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, his regiment on active service in France where he would have fought in various actions on the Western Front. Arthur was killed in action during the second battle of Bapaume (21 August – 3 September 1918). Bapaume was part of the Hundred Days Offensive (8 August – 11 November 1918) that brought about the end of WW1 but at a cost of over a million allied casualties. Maricourt Military Cemetery, where Arthur is buried was located a very short distance from what was the front line.
