Further information:
Bert was born in Kingswood the son of a bootmaker and the second youngest of four children with two brothers and a sister. Bert's father died when he was seven years old and the family moved back to live with his mother's parents in Oldland. Bert married Lillian Grace Noble a corset maker in October 1914 and together they had a boy Wilfred and a girl Gwendoline.
Bert enlisted in 1914 and fought in various actions on the Western Front as part of the 95th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) who were a front-line fighting force with a reputation for bravery. The Corps consequently had a very high casualty rate. Bert was killed in action during the German Spring Offensive (21 Mar 1918 – 18 Jul 1918) an operation that resulted in over 860,000 allied casualties and nearly 700,000 German casualties. After the armistice, Bert's body was exhumed from the battlefield and reburied in Merville cemetery extension along with many other servicemen who had also been buried in the field where they had fallen.
