Clifford enlisted in the 10th Labour Battalion, Berkshires in 1915 and transferred to 158th Company, Labour Corps. He died from wounds probably sustained during trench warfare three days before the start of the German Spring Offensive. The cemetery where he is buried was sited adjacent to the Dulhallow Advanced Dressing Station.
