Charles joined the RAF in 1940 and in 1941 was stationed at RAF Chivenor training school in North Devon where he started his training at the beginning of May 1941. On the day of his death he and 3 other members of his training course took off at 7.10 hours in a Bristol Beaufort for a navigational exercise over the sea. When they failed to return after the allotted time, they were reported as missing and the following day as presumed dead. Charles’ body was washed up on the shore near Bideford on the 4th June, but the remaining crew members were never found.
