Clifford was born in Bitton, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of ten children with five sisters and four brothers.
Clifford would have enlisted on his 18th birthday in 1918 and been posted to France soon afterwards. He died from wounds sustained in the Second Battle of Bapaume (21 August – 3 September 1918) which was an allied victory resulting in an advance of 20 miles but at a cost of 11,000 allied casualties. Clifford was just 18 years old and died only two months before the armistice. The cemetery where he is buried was used by the 47th, 48th and 55th Casualty Clearing Stations in September 1918.
