Edmund (Samuel ) Alfred Luton was born in Stapleton a middle child of 12 children. One of his younger sisters died at the age of 12 months. Edmund was registered at birth as Edmund Alfred but changed his name to Samuel Alfred on joining the army. His father worked originally as a coal miner in Wales but moved the family to Bristol where he worked as a labourer. At the age of 12 Edmund was an inmate of The National Nautical School in Portishead, which was a home for destitute and neglected boys in Bristol.
Samuel (Edmund) served with the 2nd/5th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, his regiment went out to Egypt as part of the Expeditionary Force and fought in operations in the Jordan Valley (19 February – 4 May) which included several unsuccessful attempts at capturing Amman.
During these operations, Samuel (Edmund) was initially reported as missing but this was later changed to killed in action. He is remembered on Jerusalem Memorial, which commemorates 3,300 Commonwealth servicemen who died during WW1 in operations in Egypt or Palestine and who have no known grave.
