Ernest was born in Bristol, the son of bootmaker and a middle child of ten with three brothers and six sisters most of whom also worked in the boot industry.
Ernest enlisted on 1st February 1916 and served with the 1st/24th Battalion, London Regiment. He was posted to France on 16th June 1916. Just two months later he was killed in action during the lead up to the major Battle of Flers-Courcelette. His body was never found and The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, where Ernest is remembered, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and who have no known grave.
