Ernest was born in St George in Bristol, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest child of six with two brothers and three sisters. On leaving Kingswood Boys School he worked as a bootmaker himself before enlisting in the Navy in January 1913 for a period of 12 years. On enlistment he was described as 5' 71/2" tall with brown hair, grey eyes and a sallow complexion.

Ernest's first ship was the Vivid II and his last ship, HMS Exmouth which he joined in July 1914. His records show that after that he was taken aboard RN Hospital Ship Assaye on 8th September 1915 and six weeks later he had died from an unspecified disease in the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria Egypt.
