Ernest was called up in 1914 on the outbreak of war and mobilised to France in the August. He served with the British Expeditionary Force and fought in the Battle of Mons and the Retreat and the Battle of the Marne. Ernest was killed during the First Battle of the Aisne (13–28 September 1914) which was an allied victory and he was one of 13,500 British casualties resulting from this action. His body was never found and The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial, on which he is remembered, commemorates 3,740 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) who fell at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne between the end of August and early October 1914 and have no known graves.
