Further information:
Ernest enlisted in 1914 and served with the 9th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment in the Balkan theatre of war and The Salonika Campaign during which he died. The campaign afforded few successes for the Allies, and none of any importance during the period leading up to Ernest's death. Ernest was initially reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed in action most probably during the Battle of Doiran (22/4/1917 - 9/5/1917).
Ernest's name is on a memorial sited in the centre of the line occupied for two years by the Allies in Macedonia, and it commemorates more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Macedonia over a period of 3 years (1915 -1918) the majority from sickness (mainly malaria) and wounds, and whose graves are not known.
