Further information:
Ewart was born and raised in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest of three brothers.
Ewart served with 2nd Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment who were mobilised to France in November 1914 and took part in various actions on the Western Front during WW1. In 1918, they took part in the Battles of The Somme, then fought in the Third Battle of the Aisne (27th May to 6th June) when Ewart was reported as missing - he was most probably one of 5,000 casualties of this engagement. His body was never found and he was subsequently presumed killed in action. The Soissons Memorial commemorates almost 4,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom forces who died during the Battles of the Aisne and the Marne in 1918 and who have no known grave.
Note CWGC has his date of death incorrectly as 11/6/1918
