Ernest was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest of six children with four sisters and a brother.

Ernest enlisted in the Gloucestershire Yeomanry then served in the Corps of Hussars in the Egyptian Theatre of War as part of the Egypt Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action whilst fighting against the Ottoman Army in the Battle of Rafa Egypt, which resulted in the successful capture of the Sinai Peninsula. Ernest's younger brother Walter died the following year, also while in the service of his country.
