Further information:
Edwin was born in Blackwood, Monmouthshire, the son of a gardener and a middle child of nine children with an older and a younger brother and six sisters. His younger brother Thomas also died in active service, two years after Edwin was killed.
Edwin's Regiment was "Z" 38th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Edwin was killed in action the day before the commencement of the Battle of the Somme (1st July – 18th November 1916) which lasted for 140 days at the cost of 620,000 allied casualties. It is likely that Edwin was killed in a supporting engagement that took place prior to the battle proper.
