Frederick was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of eight with five brothers and two sisters. Frederick married Minnie Britton in July 1907 whilst he was working as a shoemaker and his eldest child Frederick Harold was born that December. Frederick and Minnie had a second boy and two girls and the youngest Gwendoline was born four months before Frederick died.

Frederick enlisted in 1914 and he initially he served in the 93rd Training Reserve Battalion before transferring to the 197th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Frederick served in various actions on the Western Front and was killed in action during The Battle of Passchendaele (the third battle of Ypres) which lasted from 31st July to 10th November 1917 and resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans. Frederick’s body was never identified and the Tyne Cot Memorial where he is remembered, is one of four memorials to the missing in an area of Flanders known as the Ypres Salient, which stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south.
