Further information:

Frederick was born in Berkeley Gloucestershire, the son of a brick maker and the middle child of nine with four brothers and four sisters. He along with several of his siblings all worked in the boot industry. Frederick married Florence Ford in 1912.

Frederick served with the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, his Regiment mobilised to France in August 1914 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including The Battle of Mons and the retreat, The Battle of the Aisne and the Battles of Ypres. Frederick was killed in action during the disastrous Battle of Aubers Ridge, in which the Germans machine gunned the British frontline trenches killing many of the assault troops while still on the scaling ladders. The trenches rapidly filled with hundreds of the dead and wounded and the allies suffered 11,600 casualties that day, including Frederick. His body was never found and the memorial where he is remembered, commemorates over 13,400 British soldiers who were killed in this sector of the Western Front up to September 1915 and who have no known grave.

Frederick's youngest brother Frank, also died serving his country, two and a half years later.
