Gilbert served with the 1st/4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
Gilbert's battalion mobilised to France in March of 1915 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including pursuit of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line. In November 1917 they moved to Italy to strengthen the allied resistance and engaged in various actions there. Gilbert died of wounds whilst fighting the Austrians on the Asagio Plateau in Northern Italy. The cemetery where he is buried was located near the a number of casualty clearing stations.
