Frederick was born in Barry Glamorgan, the son of a labourer and the second eldest of six children with one brother and four sisters.
Frederick initially enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment (No 45760) later transferring to the 2nd/4th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment and served on the Western Front for the latter stages of the war. Frederick died from pneumonia two months after hostilities had ended. The cemetery where he is buried was used by the 46th Casualty Clearing Station which was based at Pont-Remy from December 1918 to April 1919.
