Frederick was born in Bedminster, one of two brothers and the eldest son of a Great Western Railway policeman. Both brothers attended Kingswood Boys School and Frederick's younger brother Herbert also died in the service of his country exactly one month after Frederick. Frederick married Dora Ethel Warner in 1915 and they had a daughter Phyllis Hilda born the following year who was aged just 5 months when Frederick died.
Frederick served with the 2nd Battalion Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. Frederick's regiment mobilised to France at the end of 1914 as part of the 8th Division and took part in various actions on the Western Front. Frederick died of wounds sustained during the Battle of St Quentin (21 – 23 March 1918) one of the battles fought during Operation Michael. Operation Michael (21 Mar 1918 – 5 Apr 1918) was a victory for the Germans at a cost of 239,800 allied casualties.
