Further information:
Frederick served with the 6th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, his battalion was mobilised to France in July 1915 and fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres. Frederick died during the German Spring Offensive (21 March – 18 July 1918). His battalion suffered significant casualties in Operation Michael (21 Mar 1918 – 5 Apr 1918) a German victory during which the Germans used poison gas. Frederick died about 4 weeks after the battle at Cugny, the location of a French Military Hospital. It is possible that he died from the after effects of the gas or from an unrelated illness.
