The battle began with the first mass use by Germany of poison gas on the Western Front. Frederick was one of over 59,000 British casualties and his body was never found. The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where Frederick is remembered, is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders and bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who have no known grave.
