Frederick was born in Kingswood, the youngest child of a plumber/mason, with two older sisters and an older brother.

Frederick was killed in action during the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April – 25 May 1915) which was fought for control of the Flemish town of Ypres in western Belgium. The battle began with the first mass use by Germany of poison gas on the Western Front. Frederick was one of over 59,000 British casualties and his body was never found. The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where Frederick is remembered, is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders and bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who have no known grave.
