Frederick was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Hong Kong on 25th December 1941 which was the last day of the Battle of Hong Kong that had lasted for 17 days. He was held prisoner of war at Sham Shui Po, which was a former British Army barracks in Hong Kong in which many prisoners died of disease and malnutrition. Frederick survived there for just over 2 years before dying at the beginning of 1944. Hong Kong was not liberated until September 1945.
