Gervase was born in Kingswood the son of a bootmaker and the eldest child of six with three sisters and two brothers. One of his younger brothers Ernest, who was in the Navy, died the following year in the service of his country.

Gervase's battalion (the 10th) mobilised to France in August 1915 and fought in various actions on the Western Front including The Battle of Loos. Gervase died of wounds during The Battle of the Somme (1 Jul 1916 – 18 Nov 1916) the outcome of which was indecisive. Gervase was one of 420,000 British casualties of this battle and was initially buried in Goettingen Military Cemetery Hanover then reburied after the armistice at Hessen.
