George was born in Plymouth, the son of a barber and the eldest of two children with a younger sister Lilian. He was baptised John George but was known as George (G Chapman on the memorial). By 1901 when George was just 5 years old, his mother was widowed.

George was called up in 1915 and was described at the time as 5' 8" tall and muscular. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France but in 1918 he had several TB related admissions to Catterick Military Hospital Yorkshire and was certified as physically unfit for service in December 1918. He was finally discharged from the army in February 1919 and was transferred to Cossham Hospital, Kingswood, where he died 3 months later from widespread Tuberculosis.
