George enlisted in 1915 and served with the 12th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, he was mobilised to France with his battalion in July 1916 as part of the Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action in the Second Battle of Arras (9 April - 16 May 1917) and was one of 158,000 allied casualties. George’s body was never identified and the Arras Memorial, on which he is remembered, commemorates nearly 35,000 soldiers of the British, South African and New Zealand forces with no known grave.
