George was the son of a bootmaker and the middle child of 5. He had an older brother and sister and a younger brother and sister. He and his older brother and sister also worked in the boot trade.

George served with the 10th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) and took part in the Normandy landings and went on to fight at Caen and Falaise. George was killed in action on the 2nd day of Operation Epsom, the aim of which was to cross the River Odon. George was previously buried near Grainville Sur Odon South West of Caen.
