Gilbert enlisted in the Navy in February 1917 and HMS Suffolk was only his second ship. On enlistment he was described as 5’ 7½” tall with fair hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. Gilbert died from pneumonia in the Naval Hospital in Vladivostock on 14th July 1918.
