Further information:
Gilbert was born in Hanham, the son of a farm labourer and a middle child of twelve with five sisters and six brothers. He married Elizabeth Annie Filer, a boot machinist (also his brother’s wife’s sister) in 1915 and like his brother Thomas was employed by Frank Moss a Kingswood Chemist.
Gilbert joined up in October 1916 and was initially in the Royal Field Artillery (No 183630) later transferring to "B" Company, 2nd Battalion, The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment). He mobilised to France in January 1917 and two months later on 31/3/1917 Gilbert was captured in Henin-Beaumont France, which was held by the Germans for most of the war. He spent the next five months as a POW in Germany and his letters home indicated that he was engaged in timbering and that his health was poor. On 31/8/1918, just four days after his brother Thomas was killed in action in France, Gilbert died. His family were notified of his death by the Red Cross six weeks later. Gilbert was buried by the Germans then later reburied in Tornai by the CWGC after the armistice.
