Henry Joseph Wilcox (also known as Joe) was born in 1896 in Wickwar. His parents were Joseph and Helen Wilcox (nee Pedrick) and he was their third son. His eleven siblings were Francis, Elsie, Albert, Ethel, Minnie, John, Ellen, Florence, Alfred, Frederick and Bessie. His father Joseph was a farm labourer from Luckington, Wiltshire. His family were living at West End in Wickwar in 1911. In 1911 Henry was working as a clerk in a brewery

Henry enlisted in Bristol and served with the 10th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Henry died on the 19th November 1915 at the age of 19 years. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British and the Victory War medals

Henry Joseph Wilcox is remembered on the Loos Memorial, France. He is also remembered on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar
