Further information:
Henry was born in Cirencester, the son of a shoemaker and the eldest of seven children with three sisters and three brothers. In 1911, he had joined the army and was later promoted from Corporal to Sergeant. It is likely that prior to his army service, he was working for Isaac Pow and Sons, boot manufacturers, along with most of the other members of his family. Henry married Beatrice Emily Roberts in 1912.
Henry served with the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, his regiment was mobilised to France in August of 1914 and would have taken part in various actions on the Western Front including the Battles of Ypres. Henry was gassed on the 28th September on the third day of the Battle of Loos in the Pas-de-Calais France. It was the first time that the British had used poison gas and the battle lasted 13 days resulting in a German victory and over 59 thousand British casualties.
Henry was transported back to England and died in the Royal Victoria Military Hospital in Netley near Southampton, 18 days later. Over 800 people attended his funeral, including many employees from Issac Pow's factory. Henry received a full military funeral including cavalry support and a rifle salute.
