Harold was in the 4th The Queens Own Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps.

Harold's Regiment fought in the North African Campaign at El Alamein then crossed to Italy in a troop ship landing in Taranto to take part in the Italian Campaign as part of the 8th Army. The allies gradually pushed the axis forces northwards and Harold was wounded at the beginning of September 1944, during the first attack on the Arno line, a German defensive position in Northern Italy. He died shortly afterwards of his wounds
