Henry was born in Hanham and baptised George Henry. He was the son of a mason and the eldest of six children with four brothers and a sister. Henry married Annie Louisa Bailey in March 1916 just a year before he died.
Henry George Mortimer served with the 6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
Henry's regiment mobilised to France in March 1915 and he fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Somme. Henry was killed in action during the Pursuit of the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. (14 March – 5 April 191)
