John was born in Kingswood the son of a shoemaker and the eldest of four brothers.

John would have been called up on his 18th birthday in the latter part of 1917. Initially he served in the Hampshire Regiment (no 42587) then transferred to the West Kents. He joined his regiment in France to serve on the Western Front and was killed in action during the Advance to Victory just 5 days before the Armistice.
