John was born in Soundwell, the son of a coal miner and a middle child of ten children with six sisters and three brothers. John married Martha Crew on Christmas day 1901 and together they had a daughter Harriet.

John served in the Balkan Theatre of War and saw action at Suvla Bay (6th -15th August) Gallipoli, where his battalion ("B" Company, 7th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment) assisted the New Zealand Infantry Brigade in the capture of Chunuk Bair. Suvla was a victory for the Turks and cost the allies 21,500 casualties. It was during this action that John was listed as missing. His body was never found and he was later presumed killed. The Helles Memorial where John is remembered, commemorates 20,000 soldiers who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign.
