John was born in Hanham the son of a bootmaker. He had a younger sister Clara.

John enlisted in 1914 initially serving in the Hampshire Regiment before transferring to the 2nd/4th Battalion, Berkshires where he was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal. In May 1916 John's regiment was mobilised to France and fought in various actions on the Western front including battles on the Somme. John was killed in action and died on the battle field. His body was reburied at Merville after the armistice.
