Further information:

John was born and raised in Kingswood, the son of a labourer and the youngest child of ten with seven sisters and two brothers. John's father died when John was 8 years old. John married Alice Elizabeth Britton in 1909 and the following year they had a son Ronald who would have been 7 years old when John died.

John enlisted in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1914 then transferred to the 17th Battalion, Welsh Regiment and his battalion mobilised to France in May of 1916. John was killed in action during the Battle of Cambrai (20th November – 7th December 1917). He was one of 44,000 casualties resulting from this engagement and his body was never identified. Although the battle resulted in minimal gains in terms of ground, it was classed as an allied victory.
