Further information:
Joseph's birth was registered in Keynsham. He was posted with the 1st battalion to Burma early in 1942 where they were attached to the 17th Indian Division. By February 1942, the British forces in Burma were unable to halt the Japanese advance and General Alexander commanded a retreat between March and May 1942, across the border to India. It was during this time that Joseph was reported as missing and seven months later was recorded as presumed killed. His body was never found and the Rangoon Memorial on which he is remembered, commemorates nearly 27,000 Land Forces of the British Empire who died during the campaigns in Burma and who have no known grave.
