Lewis Hubert Townsend was the son of Alfred and Annie Elizabeth Townsend (nee Teagle) and he was born on 28 July 1894 in Hawkesbury. He was the second of three children andhad a younger sister called May. Their father worked as a domestic gardener and was born in Wargrove in Berkshire. The family lived on the High Street in Wickwar in 1911. Lewis was working as a clerk at the brewery in 1911. He married Ethel Harriet Harding in 1915 in Dursley

He enlisted in Bristol and joined the 5th Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment (formerly 11828 Somerset Light Infantry). He became a Lance Corporal and died in September 1915 at the age of 21. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial in Gallipoli in Turkey. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals

Lewis Hubert Townsend is remembered on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar
