John's Regiment was the 401st Field Company, Royal Engineers.

John joined up in May of 1915 and served in France for over 2 years before his death. From October 1916 the Royal Engineers had been working underground, beneath the town of Arras, constructing tunnels so that the troops could arrive in secrecy in preparation for the Battle of Arras in April 1917. In September 1917 John was wounded in action and awarded a wound stripe. He was killed in action during the German Spring Offensive (21 Mar 1918 – 18 Jul 1918) and was one of 860,000 allied casualties during this operation.
